Tony The Tiger Confined to cage all his life please join our fight to set him free

Tony is a nine year old Siberian/Bengal tiger who has lived all of his nine years at a truck stop in Grosse Tete Louisiana.

His “home” is one of concrete and steel, amid the noise and fumes of cars and trucks 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
It is angering as well as sad to see this majestic cat pacing back and forth in his steel prison with people staring at and taunting him.
A sign is even posted to remind people not to throw things at him.
A 1993 Iberville Parish ordinance prohibited private ownership and display of exotic animals such as tigers, but it was never enforced. After a long heated battle between Tony’s owner, Michael Sandlin, and animal advocates fighting for Tony’s freedom, the Iberville Parish Council amended the ordinance on March 17, 2009 to allow his owner to keep Tony at the truck stop.

Tony’s fate was then in the hands of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to grant the final permit to Tony’s owner. A statement from the large carnivore manager Maria Davidson read:

“It is the Department’s position that private possession of tigers poses a significant hazard to public safety and is detrimental to the health of the animal. Prolonged confinement is by its nature stressful to tigers and proper long-term care by experienced persons is essential to the health of the animal.” Source:

These were very promising words to all who hoped the LDW&F would see that a truck stop is not the proper environment for a tiger. Not only is it an unhealthy atmosphere but it is dangerous and a threat to public safety. An accredited big cat sanctuary was ready to provide a permanent home to Tony where he would have lived in a natural habitat of earth, grass, trees, logs, had a den and pool and received the proper medical care, diet, enrichment and respect he so deserves.

On December 14, 2009, the LDW&F granted the permit to Sandlin which allows him to keep Tony at the truck stop.

I found this page through a Google Blog RSS feed set to "Free Tony the Tiger" - I have a page for Tony on Squidoo at Free Tony the Tiger and all royalties earned on the page will be donated directly from Squidoo to Big Cat Rescue.

I am hoping that if we can link all our sites together, we can have a louder voice and get more people to join the campaign.
